Heliosphere 2265, Volume 5: The Silent Power (Science Fiction)

SOL III, Sol System, 02 March 2266, 04:13 hours

Doctor Irina Petrova knew now that all was lost. The men in black had taken her from the medical bay on board the HYPERION and thrown her into this hole where she had been left to wait. She had been charged with high treason and conspiring to aid Admiral Yuri Michalev. From one moment to the next, she had gone from being a well-respected doctor to a 'traitor' implicated in a series of bloody bomb attacks and the death of President Ione Kartess.

Irina sank to the ground. Measuring just three square meters, her cell lacked sanitary facilities or even a chair to sit upon. If she was left to stew here much longer, she would have to call one of the guards to escort her to a bathroom.

And all because I fell for Yuri's lies. She slammed her fist against the cell wall.

She still had no idea as to what exactly had occurred in Sol System while the HYPERION's crew was confronting the trap laid for them by Sarah McCall after the Battle of Nova Station.

The phase-comms network outage had cut the crew off from all external sources of information. No sooner had the ship returned to Sol System than a squad of black-uniformed men stormed the medical bay to arrest her. Just a few hours had passed since then, and yet it seemed like an age ago.

The locking mechanism clicked. Irina stood and straightened her uniform. The cell door slid aside.

"Follow me, Doctor Petrova", said a young man clad in black uniform. The acronym I.S.P. was emblazoned on his breast pocket in silver lettering.

The Inner Security Police – as she now knew. "Where are you taking me?"

Her inquiry was met with silence.

Irina gave up. She followed the man without another word. It took a few moments for her eyes to adjust from the gloom of the holding cell to the harsh strip lighting which illuminated the corridor.

Her destination was another cell – this one measuring some twenty square meters and furnished with a wobbly chair and a beaten up Plastoplex table.

"Take a seat."

Irina sat. The officer left the room. Seconds later a gray-haired man entered the cell. Aged somewhere between forty and fifty, he too was dressed in the uniform of the Inner Security Police. Ignoring her, he studied the data-pad in his hand.

What the devil is going on here? They should have read me my rights by now. Where is my legal counsel?

He placed the data-pad on the table. "Doctor Irina Petrova?"

"That's me. Why have I been arrested?"

"I understand that you were the Chief Medical Officer on board the interlink cruiser HYPERION?" He stared intently at the data-pad as he spoke.

"I want to speak to my lawyer!"

The black-clad officer thrust the pad aside. "Let's get a few things straight here. You are a known agent of the renegade Admiral Yuri Michalev, who is believed to be responsible for a series of bloody bombings and assassinations which have rocked the Solar Union in your absence. The President is dead. The only surviving members of the former Admiralty Council are Pendergast and Jansen – both of whom have sided with Michalev and fled."

"But... that's impossible." Pendergast and Jansen loathed Michalev. They would never have supported him.

"A state of emergency has been declared
