T he Seattle night scene was what most of the college students, medical students, and residents looked forward to at the end of a long week. It was also a way for Dr. Bethany McNeal and her close friend Danielle, a former resident and mentor, to catch up on girl time. This rather warm but rain-drizzling night was no different. Bethany rushed around her tiny apartment getting dressed and putting the final touches on her makeup while Danielle waited impatiently on her living room couch.
"Bethany, can you please hurry up?" Danielle said, letting out a deep breath. "We're going to miss the Greek opening performance."
"You know I can't go anywhere without drawing on my eyebrows. Since when did you get into the fraternity step shows anyway?"
"Girl, you look great without makeup, and I've been to the last two performances. You'd know that, if you'd ever get out of this dreadful apartment."
Staring back at herself in the tiny bathroom mirror, Bethany rolled her eyes in the direction of Danielle, patting the lip gloss onto her plump lips before walking out. "Plus, you know that I don't like leaving Chelsea alone too much. Now let's go." Grabbing her Louis Vuitton clutch purse, Bethany stuck her tongue out at Danielle as they headed toward the door.
"You and that damn cat."
"I love my damn cat." Approaching Danielle's car, Bethany gave a bright smile as she admired the newly purchased Volvo S60. "Girl, I'm loving this new ride you have here. That new job must be paying you well."
"It is." Danielle laughed as she pressed the button on the car remote to open the doors.
Once at the Fremont Music Club, Danielle quickly parked and the two rushed through the crowded parking lot. Jumping into the long line of anxious partygoers, they could hear the rowdy crowd inside the club and the stage stomping from the Greek performance taking way.
"Oh damn, we're missing the show, Bethany," Danielle said as they pushed their way through the moving crowd. Finally making it inside, the two caught a glimpse of the show as they quickly made their way through the dimly lit, smoke-filled room to the bar.
"Those are some fine men," Danielle said to Bethany while grabbing drinks from the half-dressed female bartenders and pushing their way closer to the stage.
"Umm hmm," Bethany replied as she unexpectedly locked eyes with one of the gentlemen. Overly handsome, tall, beautiful butter-pecan skin-a breath of fresh air, she thought. His intense stare and perplexing eyes were practically undressing her black and white jumpsuit as he and his frat brothers smoothly stepped across the stage in a uniform military fashion. Not taking her eyes off him, Bethany felt her breath grow shallow as he continued looking in her direction. A few minutes later, the brothers wrapped up their performance.
The crowd moved away from the stage and dispersed throughout the club as a local band took center stage. "Well, at least we didn't miss the entire show," Bethany yelled over the noisy crowd while noticing the handsome gentleman and his fraternity brothers walking in their direction.
"You ladies enjoying yourselves?" the handsome gentleman asked, as they all stood in their fraternity T-shirts and casual jeans.
His face seemed familiar, but Bethany was sure she hadn't seen him around Seattle before. The sight of him made her nervous. She observed the movement in his lips as he spoke. The perspiration beneath her clothing suddenly made her uncomfortable as she watched his eyes scan her body.
"We are," Danielle quickly answered while Bethany and the gentleman stared at one another. "Right, Bethany?" she added, slightly nudging Bethany's arm.
"Uh, yes, right." Breaking the stare, the gentleman raised his hand out to her. Nervous, she leaned in with the hand carrying her drink in an attempt to shake his
