Coaches of Chicago

Of all the leadership books I have read, Coaches of Chicago is my favorite. Paul Pryma does a masterful job of piecing together stories of three extraordinary Chicago educators/coaches into mini-lessons on how great leadership is directly related to student success. This book is a great read for anyone in education, and a MUST-READ for any current or aspiring administrator.

Paul Pryma gets under the hood and inside the minds of three of Chicago's greatest basketball coaches. Coaches of Chicago provides a fascinating look at everything that goes into coaching and the incredible drive and intelligence it takes to succeed in the ultra-competitive world of Chicago hoops.

WOW! Like listening to Springsteen! Coaches of Chicago is a treasure box of wisdom for any teacher/coach who still loves to learn. It is such a joy to read, but more than that it is exactly what a professional development seminar should be. I'm in my sixth decade as a teacher and a coach ("one and the same" to quote the book) and this book reinforced my passion for both. Thanks, Paul.

St. Ignatius College Prep and Hinsdale Central High School

This uplifting book explores the principles of leadership as only Paul Pryma, educator and coach, could write, masterfully synthesizing the wisdom of world-renown leaders while respectfully uncovering the philosophies and motivations of three prominent coaches from the Chicagoland area. Leaders, no matter what field, will be taken on a journey through the canon of standards for achieving true leadership qualities; coaches will gain an insider's insight into the basketball arena rarely, if ever, revealed; and fans everywhere will fall in love with the game again-for, as Pryma believes, when basketball is coached and played properly, the essence of life suddenly appears as clearly as a well-executed fast-break. Dr. Pryma's passion for leading, educating, and coaching resonates in his writing and will have you reading on the edge of your seat wishing for overtime.

I can tell you for a fact that outside of my mother, no one had a more positive influence on my life than the coaches I had in high school. They taught me the importance of hard work, dedication, and the value of integrity. Coaches of Chicago is a must-read for school administrators, coaches, and parents who want to better understand this unique classroom and how coaches help young people become better citizens.

~Marty Hickman, EdD

Executive Director

Illinois High School Association

Coach Pryma has masterfully synthesized the unique characteristics and traits that great high school coaches employ as leaders. This journey inside Chicago basketball is an educational venture for coaches, educators, and any leaders entrusted with the well-being of young people. Pryma's rich story telling gives life to the virtues of these accomplished coaches.

~Dr. John Planek

NCAA and IHSA Athletic Director

Coaches of Chicago is not about Chicago...and it is not about coaches, or even basketball. As a leader in corporate America for over twenty-five years, I've had the incredible good fortune to work with, and for, many very successful business leaders. But, the most inspiring le
