Best Served Cold

Malcolm Walker was born in the West Riding of Yorkshire in 1946. With fellow Woolworths trainee manager Peter Hinchcliffe, Walker opened Britains very first first frozen food outlet in the Shropshire town of Oswestry in 1970, calling it Iceland. By 1999 there were 760 stores and Iceland was a public company, listed on the London stock exchange, In January 2000 Walker arranged his retirement, sold four million Iceland shares and left for a holiday in the Maldives. However, while there Bill Grimsey Icelands new CEO - was slashing the profits they were shortly to announce. Ultimately, Iceland announced a loss of 26m for that year rather than the 130m profit the City was expecting. Having sold 13m of shares just before the companys year-end led to Walker being questioned for three years before he was declared innocent of insider dealing. Almost exactly five years after he had left he walked back in as the boss. He revived the company and in the eight years following his return like-for-like sales have grown by more than 50%. In March 2012 Walker became Chairman and Chief Executive and is now personally worth over 150m. The incredibly story of Walkers life which he tells here for the first time and that of Iceland is as a dramatic, as you will find in business and it serves as a model for how, through hard work and intelligent risk-taking, it is possible from a relatively modest upbringing to build a national enterprise and a household name known to millions.
